About WaterScape Management

Brief History
Fly Fishing Lake and Syndicate Management in Dorset

Having been an all round angler since the age of about 10, in 2005 I decided to dedicate my summer angling time to fly fishing, as this is by far the best angling possible in the height of the summer. I work full time as a Director on four companies, often long hours, and if I am not at work I am usually busy on one of my properties, therefore being able to spend any time on the bank is a premium pleasure.

Living in North Dorset does seem to have it's disadvantages when it comes to availability of day ticket fly fishing venues. I usually end up travelling about 45 minutes to fish my "local" fly fishery. A gorgeous group of small lakes set into a valley. Many a fine summers afternoon/evening have been spent quietly hidden on the bank offering various dry flies on a floating line to the many rising rainbow and brown trout.

It was early in 2006 that I decided it was time to do something about it, a friend and I began asking some of the local farmers if they had land they did not use and if they would be interested in having a lake dug and a fishery managed on it for a financial return. We had 3 interested farmers within a matter of weeks and put together lakes designs and fishery proposals for each of them. Unfortunately the cost of lake construction outweighed the immediate financial return and the plans were shelved. A couple of months went by and I recieved a phone call from a farm manager from a neighbouring farm to one of the original proposed sites. The lake was already in existance and they wanted to try and make use of it.

This lake was the perfect setting for a fly fishing venue and straight away I agreed that I would be more than happy to stock and manage it as a fly fishery. Quickly put together the proposals and outlines for the fishery and got the thumbs up from the farm. It was at this point that the realisation of this dream caused great excitement and I quickly found myself meeting with the Environment Agency, arranging insurance cover, visiting fish farms and researching all aspects of fly fishing.

Early 2007 whilst the Environment Agency were preparing the license for stocking, I started looking for people to fish the lake. As I was going to be unable to man the site it was going to have to be fished on a pre booked basis. Research led me to believe that a "syndicate" of anglers was the best way to manage a lake from a remote point. Therefore I put together an information pack and sent it to people I thought may be interested in joining  a small synidicate. This worked quite well and a small group of people were happy to join up, and to spread the word to friends and family.

Since stocking the first lake Somerset, I have been asked to look at undertaking a similar project in my home county of Dorset. I will again be looking to stock this small water with trout.

It has become evident that there are many other small waters and areas of land with lake potential out there that are not being used for any particular purpose and that would make the most stunning private trout waters.

I have therefore set out to establish a number of small private waters and turn them into small private fly fishing waters.

The first lake and syndicate has started really well and I look forward to getting others up and running in the same manner in the near future.

In 2008 I registered with Companies House to become WaterScape Management Limited, now being able to expand the business and offer my services to other people looking to start their own lake or maintain their existing ones. Since then I have been overseeing maintenance on existing lakes and stocking waters in the region. My near future plans will be to expand my own syndicate base to 3 or 4 private waters.

Ambition

Now that the company is fully operational, I am looking to expand the business by way of offering the full range of lake services people require to design, construct, maintain and stock their ponds or lakes. I have developed various relationships with different contractors involved in the services I am now able to provide everyone.
